Why is it so often the case that the things you love doing often become the very last thing you get to do ? I guess life will set you other priorities despite your best endeavours to steer in another direction. Sadly that is what has happened over the past few months and why there haven’t been many Mallorca La Vida insights recently. But with a new vigour here we are back at the keyboard!
Lots been happening on this little bit of the Med and plenty being written on the sort of welcome you might receive when visiting here. The voices of demonstrators do not always represent everyone and at the moment a minority of voices are creating a really negative view of the people of Mallorca. In our corner of the Island we share the town with many nationalities who have come to visit or live, not wanting to destroy this beautiful historical town but to add to its immense character and hisory. Despite what you might read, the people of Mallorca are not walking around wearing T-shirts telling everyone who is not Mallorcan to go home!
Whilst no one can argue about the negative impact of tourism saturation, what can’t be ignored is the legacy of tourism that gripped hold of Mallorca many decades ago. It simply can’t be wiped out, it’s here to stay and will continue to provide essential income to many of the people who live here. Treating people with disgust who have chosen to spend their hard earned money on a holiday here does nothing more than breed a distasteful attitude in our society. Frustrations need to be directed at organisations who are the change makers. Tourism is big business and has a very loud voice.
Ok, with that small rant over, there are many more positive, sustainable projects that is fueling a new tourism. Led by people from all over the world, who call Mallorca their home, they are really working hard to bring new and refreshed ideas that embrace the history of this beautiful island without leaving a huge footprint of environmental destruction. From rejuvenated vineyards and farms, artisan producers, farm-to-table restaurants and restorations of stunning historical buildings that have become small boutique hotels, all of these are combining to bring a new modern tourism to Mallorca.
There are so many places like these to write about in one story, so over the next few articles, we will share many of these places and people with you. For now, though, if you are looking for a getaway from it all, stay with superb hospitality and a very sustainable food offering, then take a trip to Can Beneit in the tiny village of Binibona. Even if you can’t stay over, it is worth visiting for their wonderful terrace, where a lunch or dinner with produce from their own garden, is combined with stunning views across the island.
So please don’t be put off by what you are reading in the press, Mallorca has once again thrown its doors open to worldwide tourists, who will receive a warm welcome… why should you expect anything less!
